Trauma therapy may be appropriate when reactions to a difficult experience continue affecting your daily life, relationships, sleep, emotions, or sense of safety. You don’t need a formal diagnosis to reach out to a trauma therapist in NYC.
Our clinicians support adults experiencing:
If any of this feels familiar, that’s a valid reason to speak with a trauma therapist in NYC
Trauma refers to the lasting emotional and psychological impact of an overwhelming or distressing experience. PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, is a diagnosable condition that can develop when symptoms like intrusive memories, avoidance, and hyperarousal persist and interfere with daily life. Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) describes difficulties that can follow prolonged or repeated trauma, often including challenges with emotional regulation, self-concept, and relationships. C-PTSD appears in the ICD-11 but isn’t a separate DSM-5-TR diagnosis in the United States; a PTSD therapist in NYC can still address the symptoms it describes.
No single therapy is the best approach for trauma or PTSD for everyone — the most appropriate approach depends on your symptoms, history, and goals, and is discussed with your clinician during intake and ongoing care.

Yes. Difficult or overwhelming experiences in childhood can continue to affect emotional regulation, relationships, and stress responses well into adulthood, sometimes surfacing as PTSD or complex PTSD later in life. This does not mean the effects are permanent or untreatable. Many adults come to therapy specifically to understand how earlier experiences connect to present-day patterns, and trauma-informed care can help build coping skills and a stronger sense of safety, regardless of how long ago the experience occurred.
From your first contact through ongoing care, our process is designed to be clinically grounded, transparent, and centered on your individual needs.

Dr. Shatiece Riley, our founder and licensed psychologist, or a member of our clinical team conducts a structured, supportive intake — with attention to pacing that avoids retraumatization.
Based on your intake, you’re matched with the clinician whose training and clinical background are closely aligned with your needs, supporting a strong therapeutic alliance from the start.
You and your therapist build a personalized plan together through shared decision-making, informed by evidence-based practices and your stated goals.
Most clients begin with weekly 45-to-50-minute sessions. Your therapist monitors progress and adjusts frequency and focus as care develops, at a pace you help set.
Your therapist regularly revisits your goals to assess progress and refine your plan, including ongoing psychoeducation about trauma responses and coping skills.
Our licensed clinicians draw from a range of evidence-based approaches used in outpatient trauma-informed therapy. The approach or combination of approaches used in your care is determined by your clinical presentation, history, and goals, and is discussed with you directly rather than applied as a fixed protocol.
Not every approach is appropriate for every client. Your therapist will discuss which methods are most appropriate for your presentation and preferences during intake and throughout care.

No. Our clinicians are psychologists and licensed mental health counselors, so we provide psychotherapy rather than medication. Some people benefit from combining therapy with medication prescribed by a psychiatrist or primary care provider. If that may suit your care, we can coordinate with your existing prescriber or discuss a referral during your consultation.
That depends on individual circumstances and isn't something a therapist can determine. Complex PTSD isn't a separate DSM-5-TR diagnosis in the United States, though it's recognized in the ICD-11. Disability determinations are made by the Social Security Administration or an employer, not a therapy practice — we can't offer legal or benefits advice, but we can discuss how your symptoms affect daily functioning.
There's no single answer. Healing time depends on factors like how long the experience lasted, when it occurred in your life, and the support available to you — not on the "type" of trauma. Your therapist builds a plan around your specific history.
EMDR isn't appropriate for every client. Your clinician assesses your history, current stability, and goals before recommending EMDR or any other approach, and discusses alternatives such as CBT, TF-CBT, or CPT if EMDR isn't the right fit right now.
They overlap but aren't identical. Trauma therapy addresses the broader impact of difficult experiences, whether or not someone meets criteria for PTSD; PTSD therapy targets the diagnosed condition specifically. A PTSD therapist in NYC at SR Psychological Services addresses both within the same outpatient service.
This varies by person. Most clients begin with weekly 45-to-50-minute sessions, and treatment length is reviewed regularly with your therapist rather than fixed in advance.
